The complications of DIC result from the clinical effects of activation of the coagulation system:

  • consumption of clotting factors and platelets leads to bleeding (haemorrhagic manifestations),
  • activation of coagulation and consumption of physiological inhibitors of coagulation lead to thrombosis (thrombotic manifestations).
